How AI Transforms Genealogy Research

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, has become a useful tool for genealogy research. It can transcribe handwritten records, translate foreign languages, highlight important details, colorize and restore old photos, and analyze DNA matches. AI can even help write family stories. These tools speed up research and can reveal links that otherwise go unnoticed. Nevertheless, it is important to verify AI results, as mistakes can happen.

AI Applications In Genealogy

Document Processing and Handwriting Transcription

AI excels at reading handwriting in historical records, efficiently transcribing text, and extracting details like names, dates, and locations. While this significantly reduces manual effort, thorough proofreading remains necessary to guarantee accuracy. The family Bible page below was translated fairly well after transcription using Google Gemini.

Photo Enhancement

AI tools like VanceAI, Befunky, Fotor, and MyHeritage In Color™ can automatically add color to old photos. They can restore these photos, making black-and-white images look more realistic. ChatGPT and other tools can also enhance old photos. For example, the newspaper image below on the left is of my great-great-grandfather, David Ephraim Willis. After uploading the picture to ChatGPT, a clearer, enhanced version of David appears, making him look more lifelike.

Data Analysis

Machine learning can look at DNA matches, sort them into family groups, and help find unknown relatives more quickly. Cutting-edge computational techniques, like machine learning, are vital to genetic genealogy by speeding up the process of identifying unknown relatives. These algorithms examine extensive DNA databases. They group matches into family clusters. They use approaches like shared matches and endogamy analysis, which involves marrying only within the local community, tribe, or clan. This approach helps researchers construct family trees much more efficiently than manual techniques.

Several commercial genetic testing services use these techniques. You can learn more about how they sort DNA matches on services like AncestryDNA®. Matches by cluster groups your DNA matches according to how they relate to one another, rather than solely to you. Rather than examining matches individually, this method organizes them into color-coded clusters that each represent a shared family line. This approach makes it easier to find unknown ancestors, overcome genealogical “brick walls,” and discover new family connections more efficiently. Alternatively, read resources available through the International Society of Genetic Genealogy Wiki.

Research Assistance

AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude can help with planning your genealogy research. These tools suggest valuable resources you have overlooked. They can help solve complex research challenges. Additionally, they offer historical context about your ancestors’ lives. For example, I once asked Claude for advice when I wanted to research my grandfather’s Italian military records but was unsure where to start

Storytelling

AI can transform your research and data into interesting family stories. It can also create biographies. This makes your family history easier to share and enjoy. A great example of this transformation can be found at Know Who Wears the Genes In Your Family.
